Cardinal Gibbons Says Mass at Washington—President and Cabinet Attend
“A Solemn Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of the murdered Empress Elizabeth of Austria was celebrated at St. Matthews Church, Washington, D. C., on last Saturday, Cardinal Gibbons being the celebrant. Among those in attendance were President McKinley and the members of his Cabinet, the ambassadors and ministers of foreign governments in their brilliant diplomatic uniforms, representatives of the United States Army, Navy, and Supreme Court, and a large gathering from private life.” So says the Catholic Mirror. A part of the heading is, “Cardinal Gibbons Says Mass at Washington—President and Cabinet Attend.” This was purely a Roman Catholic Church affair. Such items as the above, which are constantly increasing in number, are straws which clearly show which way the wind is blowing.
