Madagascar Mission Outlook Improves
Madagascar.—The outlook in this great island seems to be changing rapidly. In our last number we reported the efforts of the deputation of the London Missionary Society to convince the people, as well as General Gallini, the French resident, that the work of that society had nothing to do with politics, and that the converts would be loyal to the French Government. The governor has been convinced of this fact and has stated that his policy would now be entirely changed. The deputation reported themselves as satisfied with the promises now made them. In a letter to the Journal des Missions Évangéliques a missionary writes that in the six districts supported by him 4,000 children have returned to the Protestant schools, and 3,000 adults to the churches. While the Jesuits continue their violent measures in the country districts, they do not affect the people as formerly. The Evangelical Society of France is doing all it can to send missionaries and teachers, yet the number is quite too few to meet the demands. But the outlook is certainly improving.—Missionary Herald.
