Madness and Crime

The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin of August 20 records the suicide of two girls simply and solely because they could not get work on the stage. After repeated attempts to obtain employment in theaters their narrowed vision saw nothing more in life, and they drowned themselves. The same paper of August 23 records that the first twenty-two days of August were marked in that “City of Brotherly Love” by twenty-two murders and suicides, or attempts at suicide. There were twenty similar cases in July, and between June 10 and July 1 fifteen more. The record is a horrible one, but it is characteristic of these last days, as foretold by the prophets. See Isaiah 59; 2 Tim. 3:1–5.
