“NOT ALL.”

“Not all that I'd like to do”—the day That began full of vigor and high intent, Has passed, and darkness and night have come, And I have not done one-half I meant.
“Not all whom I'd like to cheer,” ah, no!— I think of the paths intersecting mine, Where many a dark-winged shadow falls, And grace and love do not often shine.
If for me some radiant joy has blown, How blessed to share its dear delight With another whose somber pathway lies All overcast by the shade of night!
“Not all that I'd like to do”—if ever The day shall dawn when we truly say, “No plan has failed, no purpose thwarted,” 'Twill be in the everlasting day.
