What Sabbath Then?

—Says a writer in The Christian Statesman of July and August, 1898: “The State’s supreme law in all moral conduct is the divine law of the Scriptures. If nations are under the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, the will of Christ must be taken by them as supreme in all moral questions, such as the Sabbath, temperance, marriage, divorce, etc.” But if the divine law of the Scriptures guided, what would be the national Sabbath law? The only divine Sabbath law declares, “The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” But the nation could never obey the law to “remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy,” unless the nation were holy; and God alone can make a nation holy by making its people holy by individuals through faith.
