Poor Italy

Poor Italy.—She jumped from the frying-pan into the fire when she threw off the papal yoke and saddled herself with war burdens as one of the great powers of Europe. The ecclesiastical burden weighs heavily still on the country in its draft on the devotees of the Catholic Church, while the national financial expenses and burdens are crushing. What will happen when Leo XIII. passes away? Will his successor preach a new crusade, push forward needed democratic reforms, and so overthrow the government? The Independent well remarks, “The future of Italy is by no means clear.”
