TO-MORROW

I HEAR the trumpet of the morrow call; I see her glittering summits proudly rise Against the ever-glorious amber skies; I idly sit, while shadows lengthen to their fall, And dream, in listless mood, of all The great and golden opportunities I deem the pregnant future hour supplies, Till night shuts round me with her somber pall. Illusive dream! Let me the lesson learn, And urge it on my feeble, fainting will, That if to-morrow comes ’twill be to-day; And, knowing this full well, O, let me yearn, With honest, well-directed toil, to fill Each hour along a straight and perfect way! —Rev. N. B. Ripley, in The Voice.
