Church and State in the Philippines

Mr. Joseph T. Mannix, a newspaper correspondent, and himself a Roman Catholic, in reporting his investigations in the Philippine Islands, which investigations were greatly hindered by the Spanish authorities, tells us, according to the Literary Digest, that “the Church and State are so inseparably linked together that no important action is taken by Spain’s political representatives in the islands until the archbishop has first been consulted;” and that many of the friars, the majority, “are greatly concerned in political matters, have acted as agents of the government in imposing arbitrary and burdensome taxation on the natives.” And so it will ever be where Rome rules.
