WHAT LIBERTY IS NOT.

Liberty, says the American Banner, is not the privilege of following the majority, but it is the inalienable right of the individual to go contrary to the majority, if conscience so dictates. To claim that the majority is always right, is to fall into the old Roman error of “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” (“The voice of the people is the voice of God”), which makes fallible men equal with an infallible God. If every living man were to support a wrong principle, it could not change it to right.
