Voluntary Religious Work for the Army
“Should not the soldiers in the armies of earth have religious instruction?”—Yes, if they desire it and it is voluntary on the part of both giver and receiver. If Christian instruction were freely given by an army chaplain and freely received by all the soldiers, it would make non-combatants of every one, and the chaplain would at once be discharged. Let all religious work for the army and navy be voluntary. Let denominations send their men, unfettered by any earthly government, and let these men preach the blessed Gospel as Christ gave it, and point the sinner, living or dying, to Christ. Let friends at home pray for the men in the strife, and send them good religious literature. The anomaly and inconsistency are found in the paid army chaplains.
