The Founder of the W.C.T.U

The real founder of the W. C. T. U. is said to be Mrs. Mattie McClellan Brown, wife of the Rev. W. K. Brown, of Cincinnati. She made all the arrangements of the first convention, held in Columbus, in February, 1874. In 1875 her plan was copyrighted and the national organization formed. She has always refused office in the union. She is vice-president of the Cincinnati Wesleyan College, dean of the school of art, and teacher of criticism of art, literature, and oratory. “And with all her erudition,” it is said, “she remains a womanly woman, modest, refined, sensitive to impressions, and generous always.”
