MERCY TO THE PENITENT.

The sinner’s sincerity owning his wrong, The mercy of God, freely given,— These two are the hinges on which have been hung The door of the kingdom of heaven.
Thrice bless’ed be God, who doth not turn away The prayer of the penitent heart; Who never in anger of spirit doth say To him who is contrite, “Depart.”
Tho far from his Father the prodigal roam, And wasteth His substance in sin; If only the son will turn back from his wrong, The Father will welcome him in.
He’ll welcome him in with a loving embrace, And call to His servants to bring, For him who at last hath been won by His grace, The shoes, and the robe, and the ring.
The calf must be killed, the table be spread, And merry be all at the board; “For this,” saith the Father, “My son hath been dead, But now unto life is restored.”
O ye who have tasted such welcome as this, Go tell it to others around! For many a wanderer longs for the bliss Which you so rejoice to have found.
