DEFAULTING AND DEFAULTERS.
The San Francisco papers bring us the news that the treasurer of that city has embezzled $116,000 from its funds. Such failures of treasurers and others in charge of funds are of daily occurrence. Millions of dollars are being taken in this way every year. And each succeeding year shows a worse record than the previous one. Many men have loudly claimed that the world is growing very much better; but the facts are all against them. God’s Word declares that “evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” 2 Tim. 3:13. The facts all show that God is right and the statements of the divine Book are true. To go with the multitude is the most popular for the present, but to walk with God is right both now and forevermore. On April 20 another train in California was held up by robbers. This is the second occurrence of this kind within the last few weeks. These robberies, in their frequency and boldness, forcibly remind us of the Scriptures, which tell that in the “last days” the earth shall be “filled with violence.” The prevalence of robberies of all kinds, the murdering, and, above it all, the prevalent war fever, unmistakably give evidence that we have reached an age of “violence.” And the great boasts of the civilization that we have attained, are only empty bubbles in the face of the appalling facts that surround us.
