Abolishing God.

A current press item says:— “At a labor convention recently held in Chicago, Emma Goldman, the female anarchist, introduced a resolution to abolish God from the belief of man. While the resolution was foolish in the extreme, it manifested the extremes to which anarchy is ready to go in order to destroy all vestige of law and order.”
This is a specimen of avowed anarchy against the government of God. But it is only one feature of the great adversary’s design to accomplish his infidel purpose. A far deeper scheme on his part is to incite men in the church to anarchy by endeavoring to abolish the law of God. Were it possible to do so, the effect would be the same as was purported by the Goldman resolution. It is quite common to hear professed “Christian” men arguing that the law of God was abolished at the cross, &c. If that were true, then would God’s government be abolished, and for all practical purposes He might as well be Himself abolished “from the belief of men.” There would then be no such thing as sin, for “sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4); “where no law is, there is no transgression” (Rom. 4:15). And the claim that a man has a right to alter the law of God as given in His Word, in any particular, is of the same species of anarchy; for if man can in any way amend the law of God, he can therefore get along without a Supreme Director of Affairs. All departure from the plain Word of God is spiritual anarchy.
