The Solar Eclipse

The Solar Eclipse expeditions to India all report favorable weather and good success. Oaklanders are much interested in the matter, because one of their own townsmen, Charles Burckhalter, of the Chabot Observatory, had charge of an expedition, and used in photographing the eclipse an apparatus by himself invented, in which a revolving diaphragm is arranged to retard exposure in the brighter portions of the corona, and permit a full impression upon the sensitive plate of the camera, of the fainter streamers. Mr. Burckhalter wires, “The results come fully up to my expectations.” The Lick Observatory party, under Professor Campbell, report satisfactory work.
