Liquor Trade in West Africa

Rev. James Johnson, who has labored in the British Colony of Lagos, West Africa, for eighteen years, states that “packages of gin and rum were found everywhere. Large steamers loaded with liquor, lay at anchor; warehouses were crammed to the doors with gin; canoes were loaded with gin, highways and byways, the river bank, and the bush were littered with demijohns. The very soil of Abbeokuta seemed composed of broken bottles. At Aforjupa the seats in the churches were empty gin boxes.”
