A Straw Indicative of the Prosperity Breeze.
The Nazareth Waist Company, of New York, printed in two of the morning papers the following notice:— “WANTED.—Boy; $4.00 per week, with chance for advancement if faithful and reliable. Address, in own handwriting, Walter, 52 Leonard St.” Within twenty-four consecutive hours the company received 511 applications in writing and seventy in person. The age of more than half of the applicants averaged eighteen years, one being twenty-four. The letters were well-written, and correctly spelled and punctuated. Four could speak and write in three different languages, and over twenty claimed to be masters of two languages. The commutation tickets to the place of work of many of these “boys” would cost one-fourth of the wages, and a very large number of the applicants solicited the place at $3.00 per week. It is a pitiful condition of things, isn’t it? Plenty that ought to be done, plenty to do it, plenty of money if circulated to pay for it, and yet men can not get work at any price. Isn’t it time for the Lord to take from man his abused stewardship?
