Rioting and Repression in Russia
SERIOUS rioting has been going on in different parts of Russia for several days. At St. Petersburg, on March 18, a large number of students and teachers engaged in a demonstration on the anniversary of the death of a young woman who had committed suicide in a fortress to escape persecution. The Cossacks and police charged the crowd with heavy whips, inflicting severe punishment, and about 800 of the demonstrators were arrested. The report states that faces were cut open by the whips of the Cossacks, and old women were almost crushed to death. Further disorders are expected, as the harsh treatment by the soldiers will not be likely to increase the love of the people for the government they were denouncing.
