Excessive Labor and Premature Death

Mr. James R. Randall, in the Catholic Mirror, in speaking of the suicide of Mr. McCullogh, late editor of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, says that “it is evident that he, as his doctor stated, ruined his mind and body by excessive labor, want of exercise, and profligate use of tobacco. I have no doubt that many men who die violently or otherwise, prematurely, bring on kidney troubles, brain disease, and so-called heart failure in the same way. Some men become possessed ambitiously with a kind of demon of labor, and resort to stimulation in middle age. Nature is revenged upon them at last.” All of which is no doubt true. Men drive their brain to insanity or their heart to death.
