In the report of the Sacramento Sunday-law Convention, on another page, it will be seen that Mr. Ketchum, in his advocacy of a Sunday law, bases it upon the fourth commandment. He said:— “The law of God formed one complete and perfect arch of which the fourth [commandment] was the keystone. They must all stand or fall together.” This is emphatically true. But that fourth commandment declares, “The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” As that arch came from the hand of the Great Architect and Builder, it is perfect. Every stone will hold. The Sabbath keystone quarried from the eternal rock of God’s truth will endure the thrust of the mighty arch, through all of which runs the life of the Eternal. But our Sunday-law friends propose two evils: They will substitute for the Sabbath keystone of God’s word, a sun-dried brick of traditionary clay; and instead of the arch being bound together by God’s life,—the inherent bond of truth,—they propose to bind it together by the untempered mortar of traditionary religious legislation. Both will fail even when they seem to be the greatest success; the untempered mortar will crumble, the counterfeit keystone will be crushed, and its worshipers will be buried in its ruins.
