THE BIBLE ALONE.

The writer once listened to a lecture by the great astronomer, the late Richard A. Proctor, the celebrated author of “Other Worlds than Ours.” He told what great achievements had been obtained by science, so that the motions of the heavenly bodies were now reduced to a mathematical formula, and even the orbits of those most eccentric bodies, the comets, could be calculated to a certainty; but at the conclusion of his lecture he gave it as his solemn verdict that, notwithstanding all this arrangement, adaptation and perfect order, no human mind by searching could find out God. He was himself a devout Christian, but he was such only because of the revelation of the Bible. The revelation of the stars was unable and powerless to produce in his mind an absolute conviction even of a Supreme Architect.—J. N. Hallock, D.D.
