Hard Questions

The great viceroy of China, Li Hung Chang, is upon our shores and learning all he can about American life. He has more questions to ask than the proverbial Yankee. In fact, it is said that some of the questions he has been asking the rich men of England and America are quite embarrassing. He often presses home such questions as, “How did you get so much wealth?” and “How much more do you want?” All wealth has not been gotten by the most honorable means. The combines, trusts, cornered wheat and corn, watered stock, and wholesale gambling can not bear an over amount of questioning. Li Hung Chang can hardly leave England or America with the same satisfaction that the Queen of Sheba left Solomon after proving him with hard questions. We presume the Jewish king answered more wisely and frankly. But there will come a time when the Judge of all the earth will ask questions more searching than those asked by the great man of the Orient, and his questions will elicit truth. If the rich men will not answer, the books of God, kept by angelic scribes, will. What will the record be?
