Imperiled

Imperiled.—Says Charles Roads, D.D., of Philadelphia, on “Christian Endeavor in Citizenship”:—
“The platforms of each of the great parties have several issues and the party orators will discuss all of them. Here is our opportunity to show that the Christian features of our government are being imperiled, and that we must defend them and entrench them securely, as the amendment [to the Constitution, recognizing the rulership of Christ] will do.”
But whatever features truly Christian are to be seen in this government came not through legislation, but by being implanted by the Spirit of Christ in the hearts of the people of the government. When a feature of the Christian religion is made a matter of human legislation, it ceases at that moment to be Christian. It may have the form, but it is a mere shell. Nothing is so imperiling the Christianity of these men engaged in this work of national reform as the very work they are doing. Genuine Christianity will live despite all legislation.
