AWE-INSPIRING AND APPALLING.

THERE is something so awe-inspiring and so appalling in the visitation of a tornado that man, realizing his absolute helplessness before the forces of nature, stands in abject terror at the contemplation of a disaster like that of recent date. All the much-vaunted human power becomes the puniest trifle. Man’s life and his greatest works vanish in a moment. There is no escape, no protection, no palliation. Nothing can stay the whirlwinds when they descend upon the earth.
Yesterday it was the proud city of St. Louis that was visited with relentless fury. To-morrow it may be some other metropolis. The storm was probably the worst in the history of the country; for it is the first that has ever devastated a great city. Its record will stand as one of the saddest of recent times.—Denver Times.
