A Confession

A Confession.—The religion of Christ is spiritual. Spiritual power alone can introduce it in the human heart, can maintain it, can propagate it; and this spiritual power—all power—is promised even to the end of the world. When, therefore, men ask the power of the state to aid religion or to enforce their religious dogmas, institutions, tenets, or days upon others, they confess by that very asking that they have lost faith in Christ, and that he is not sufficient for the work. Thus they put man in the place of God. They either deny Jesus Christ, or confess that they know him not.
