The Caucus and the Prayer Meeting
In these days of “reform,” we often hear such expressions as the following, accredited to Dr. Bashford:— “The time is coming when a Christian man will feel it as much his duty to attend the caucuses of his party as to attend the prayer-meetings of his church.” Alas! the time has been here already too long when at least professed Christians have felt the caucus “duty” far more than that of the prayer-meeting. And the great so-called “Christian citizenship” craze is adding much to the imaginary importance of the party caucus. And as this interest increases, the prayer-meeting interest must decrease, excepting as the latter takes on the character of the caucus.
