Our Home

We give on this page a cut of the home of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES; that is, it is the place where the various members of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES family (myriads each year) are born, and from which they go out into the world; for the SIGNS is not a stay-at-home paper, and very few of the millions have returned to the place of birth. It is brought into being for the sole purpose of going abroad to the world, bearing the glad message of the Gospel, the precious news of a soon-coming Saviour. The first number was issued under date of June 4, 1874. It consisted of eight large four-column pages, and was published nominally weekly at $2.00 a year. Elder James White was both editor and proprietor. He believed that in the growing city of Oakland should be established a paper for pioneer work in giving to the world the last warning message. Its beginning was laid in self-denying toil and struggle, with few friends, issued only occasionally, as time and money permitted. Subsequent results have justified the enterprise and faith of those who founded it. The SIGNS now has an ever-increasing circle of devoted friends, who are interested in its home, its management, and its mission.
The two-story building in the top of the picture at the left is the first publishing building, erected in 1876. The large central building was erected in 1887. The building at the right with a tower is our church. The lower part of the picture is another view of the same structures.
