What Next? Senate Recognition of Cuban Belligerency

What Next?—If the other branches of the government law-making machine follow the Senate in recognizing Cuban belligerency, it will be difficult to tell where the matter will end. Cuba is making a hard struggle for liberty. Spain counts them rebels. The recognition of their resistance to Spain as legitimate warfare may mean trouble between this country and Spain, possibly war. It does not necessarily mean Cuban liberty; doubtless it would help in a financial way. One correspondent says that it is evident “that what is wanted in the United States Senate is a foreign war, and that they believe Spain to be the easiest thing in sight.” We hope that the ideas of that body are more noble than that. Let Christians pray that God may overrule for good.
