Christ and the Church

Christ and the Church.—The relation between each individual and Christ, and therefore between the church and Christ, is illustrated by marriage. Christ is the husband; the believer, as well as the believing church, is the spouse. (See Rom. 7:4; Eph. 5:31, 32; 2 Cor. 11:2.) From Christ she receives her help, her power, her name, her character, her all. To leave his word for the theories or creeds of men is to bring confusion and make her Babylon; and to ask aid of earthly powers or to connect with them to obtain aid in the work of religion, is to reject Christ and to commit fornication with the kings of the earth. See James 4:4; Rev. 18:3. But this sad thing the church is doing when she asks aid of the state to “protect” or “promote” what she calls a Christian institution. Would God she might return to the Husband of her youth.
