Government Funds for Denominational Indian Schools.

It is worth noting again that in the strife between Roman Catholics and Protestants for government funds for Indian schools under denominational control, the Catholics are left almost sole masters of the field. For instance, during the years 1886 to 1896 inclusive we give the following appropriations to all schools outside of regular government schools, and the amount to Roman Catholics. The difference between the total to all schools and the amount to Roman Catholics will show what Protestant churches and some undenominational institutions have received:—
In 1886, total amount to all private schools, denominational and undenominational, $228,259, of which Roman Catholics received $118,343; 1887, total $363,214, Catholics $194,635; 1888, total amount $376,264, Catholics $221,169; 1889, total $529,905, Catholics $347,672; 1890, total $562,640, Catholics $356,957; 1891, total $570,218, Catholics $363,349; 1892, total $611,570, Catholics $394,756; 1893, total $533,241, Catholics $375,845; 1894, total $537,600, Catholics $389,745; 1895, total $463,505, Catholics $359,215; 1896, total $370,796, Catholics $308,471. The total amount thus appropriated during the eleven years for all private schools, most of which are or were under denominational control, is $5,147,212, of which Roman Catholics received $3,430,157, or more than three-fifths of the total. The undenominational institutions and all the Protestant denominations combined have been no match for Rome in politics over school appropriations. What will the outcome be when we come to the final test?
