Honoring the Flag Through Principle, Not Symbol

An article on “Old Glory” appears this week in our columns. It suggests some thoughts that our readers would do well to ponder. It is possible for us still to hold the symbol of what is good very dear, yet at the same time disregard all that is symbolized by it. The Jews built and garnished the tombs of the prophets, but they crucified Him whose Spirit inspired the prophets. There are and have been millions who professedly worship Christ yet who persecute him in his followers. There are states in this Union shouting themselves hoarse in honor of the flag which are prosecuting or persecuting those entitled to its protection. To truly honor the flag is to love and practice the principles symbolized by the “Red, White, and Blue,”—“equal rights for all, and special privileges for none.”
