Do We Prize It?

We are prone to despise common things, however valuable they may be. This is true as respects God’s word even among Christians. It was once considered very precious, as indicated in our illustration, “The Forbidden Book.” Job said that he considered the words of God’s mouth “more than his necessary food.” To David they were more precious than the droppings of the honeycomb. But now the Bible is common and but few regard it as precious. They despise it in the sense that it is unheeded and unprized. But God’s word is needed now. It should be daily food now. It should be the life of the Christian now. But, like the air we breathe, like the sunlight in which we live and thrive, it is not appreciated by the great mass of humanity, and even professed Christians. And yet should God’s word fail, air and sunlight would fail. The word which said, “Let there be light,” gives “the light of the glory of God” to every believing soul. The atmospheric air, the sunlight, we drink in unconsciously; but we must desire and cherish the light and life and nourishment of God’s word if it do us good. Do you, reader, prize that word as you should? Is it light to you? God grant that it may be.
