Sunday-Closing Movement Seen as Push for Sunday Law
The Sunday-Closing Movement is in the interests of a full-fledged Sunday law. Some months ago in these columns this was shown to be the case with the movement in California; and this is what Mrs. Bateham, the national superintendent of the Sabbath Observance Department of the W. C. T. U., says in the Union Signal of September 19:— “The Sabbath question is still forcing itself on the attention of the country. Public Opinion not long since predicted that the coming election in New York City would turn on whether Sunday should continue to be protected as A HOLY DAY. The issue has since been narrowed to Sunday local option for rumsellers, BUT THE LARGER QUESTION IS ONLY DELAYED, and there and elsewhere will yet push itself politically, backed by a strong force bent on breaking down or neutralizing Sabbath law.”
