French Expedition to Madagascar and Catholic Missions
We have a decided hint of what is expected from the French military expedition to Madagascar in a letter from Paris, printed in the Catholic Times of Philadelphia, which regards the expedition, from the Catholic point of view, “as most desirable.” It says: “The times are approaching when our missions will receive substantial support from that European power which, whatever the fault at home, has never failed to protect Catholic interests abroad. It is the fashion to speak of French policy in Madagascar as a check to England. It is nearer the truth to regard it as a check given to British Protestantism.”
