“ARMED CHRISTIAN ENDEAVORERS!
MR. GEO. T. ANGELL, the energetic conductor of Our Dumb Animals, has in a recent issue the following, evidently referring to Boys’ Brigades of Sunday-schools, etc.:— “ARMED CHRISTIAN ENDEAVORERS!
“If it is a good thing for Sunday-school, why not for Christian Endeavorers? “Think of a million of Christian Endeavorers—white endeavorers and colored—armed with rifles, bayonets, swords, cannon, and gatling guns—and a great Christian Endeavor Navy of ironclads, rams, and torpedoes. “What a power they could bring to convert the heathen to a knowledge of Christianity! “If it is a good thing for the Sunday-schools, why not for the Christian Endeavorers?” The Italics are as we find them. The query is to the point, and perfectly logical. And “armed Christian Endeavorers” is a perfectly logical outcome of political Christian Endeavorers. If “Christian” workers accept of one element of the world to promote, foster, or forward “moral” and “religious” “reforms,” they will be ultimately and logically forced to the matter of carnal force, the gospel of coercion. Let Christian “Christian Endeavorers” think of this.
