INSTIGATED BY RELIGIOUS PEOPLE.

In Maryland and other states the Sunday laws, which, like those of Connecticut, prohibit the kind of labor a person may perform on the first day of the week to works of necessity and mercy, are being used to persecute the Seventh-day Adventists and Baptists. These people are being arrested, fined, and thrown into jail on account of their belief. We have not reached a point of such injustice here, even if we have the legal power. There are many persons in Connecticut who labor on Sunday and refrain on Saturday. This is notably so in the eastern part of the state, where a large printing press concern in Southington is in full operation on Sunday, it being owned by devout and consistent Seventh-day Baptists. In religious matters, such as this, there should be wide latitude in the enforcement of old statutes, and each man should be a law unto himself. The most singular thing about the persecutions we have spoken of in other states is the fact that they are instigated by the members of other religious denominations.—Bristol, Conn., Herald.
