Buddhist Relics Carried from Siam to Japan

Not long ago certain relics, considered sacred and highly esteemed by the Buddhists, were brought from Siam to Japan with great ceremony, and on their arrival at Kyoto the whole road over which they were to be carried was covered with cotton cloth, twelve hundred pieces being used, costing about sixteen hundred dollars. This cloth was then supposed to be very sacred, and to have magical power, and after the procession had passed over it, was sold at a dollar a foot. The sum realized was something over sixty-eight thousand dollars.
