Government Obstacles to Bible Distribution Abroad

In addition to the ceaseless opposition of the Roman Church, in many countries, the work of distributing the Bible is seriously hindered by the governments. In parts of the Austrian empire licenses for colporteurs are withheld. In Greece the government has placed a ban on the modern Greek Bible issued by the British and Foreign Bible Society. Leave is lacking for a colporteur to work in Montenegro. The French authorities prohibit the public sale of the Scriptures in Tunis, and they have not yet allowed the society to resume work in Cochin China. The Turkish government forbids the issue of the four Gospels in Albanian in native character. The government of Persia has stopped all importations of the Scriptures in the native tongue. The public exercise of any other than the Roman Catholic religion is prohibited by the constitution of the republic of Peru.
