LIFE

METHINKS that I stand by a deep, mighty river, That silently flows toward an infinite sea, And sometimes the waves dash in pitiless grandeur, And sometimes they murmur like music to me. And look! there are barges with white banners streaming, So swiftly and silently sweeping along, And the prayer of the saint and the curse of the scoffer Are strangely commingled with reveler's song. And some of the barks are enshrouded with darkness, And some wear a halo of heavenly light, While some are led on by the hand of an angel, And some by the furious demons of night, And some are in quiet, and some are in strife,— Ah, this is a picture—a picture of life.
