“WHAT SHE COULD”

“She hath done what she could,” said the Master, “for me;”
“How tender and sweet was the word! And the deed she hath done her memorial shall be Wherever my gospel is heard.”
Ah, ’tis this that must try every deed that we do, Ere Jesus pronounces it good: Not the thing we have done, but the love it may show, And whether we’ve done what we could.
There are some that are struggling along on the way, And reaping, they think, only leaves; Whilst others return at the close of the day, And bring in a harvest of sheaves.
But the eye of the Master is on every one; Not a sigh nor a struggle is lost; And it is not the much nor the little we’ve done, But — what has the offering cost?
Not the poor widow’s mite, nor the gold of the king, Shall count of itself in the test; It will not be the stamp of the coin that we bring, But whether the gift is our best.
