Candor and the Danger of Being Deceived

It is a mistake to suppose that those who, themselves, are perfectly candid and artless, are easily and frequently deceived. Such a notion is a delusion. Candor is as undeceived as it is undeceiving. And although those who are true to themselves and to others, may be occasionally even duped by their confidence in those who do not deserve it, still they are usually free from that blind partiality or aversion for men and things which is satisfied with the most hollow appearance.
