Who Was Pagninus?

Pagninus’ version of Isa. 65 : 20, given at the close of Bro. Butler’s article week before last, is so often referred to, that it will be of interest to the reader to learn more about this commentator. The “Companion to the Bible” gives the following sketch of him:—
“Sanctes Pagninus. A learned Dominican; born at Lucca, 1466; died 1536. He was eminently skilled in the Hebrew, Chaldee, and Arabic languages. At the instance of Leo X., he undertook a new version of the Bible into Latin, from the originals, which was highly commended by the Jewish rabbins, but which Father Simon, with his usual severity, censures as harsh, too servile, obscure, and full of solecisms. He also published a Hebrew Thesaurus, much used by Buxtorf in his Lexicon, a Hebrew Grammar, and an Introduction to Sacred Literature. Koenig; Lempriere.”
