The Railways of the World.
From the following statement which we find in the N. Y. Independent, of April 15, 1875, it appears that nearly half of the entire mileage of the railways of the world, is found in the United States. Of the length and cost of railways, and the recent origin of this marvelous wonder, it speaks as follows:— The total cost of the railways of the world, excluding those of the United States, is $9,854,764,560, with a mileage of 80,653 miles. The cost of railroads in the United States, is $3,784,543,034, with a mileage in 1874 of 70,651 miles. The aggregate cost of all the railroads in the world is $13,638,307,594, with a total mileage of 151,304, miles. The average cost per mile of all these roads is $53,567. Nearly all these roads are located in Europe and this country, and all of them are almost entirely the creations of the last forty years.
