RUSSIA OR TURKEY? WHICH?

Rev. David Strang, in the Christian at Work, of Sept. 28, 1876, reviewing carefully the whole problem of the Eastern Question, says:—
“This problem, Russia, if allowed, would soon solve, by either sharing or summarily seizing the Sick Man’s European estate. Nor is this so immoral or unfair as has often been asserted; for the sickness is not merely physical, but moral and chronic, and recent events prove the Turk as unfit to govern his European provinces as is a raving maniac to command an ocean steamer. He should be put out of his place as promptly as a captain smitten with sudden lunacy. It is sometimes objected that Russia would tolerate only the Greek communion, but she does tolerate others; and if, for reasons not wholly religious, she has compelled the Mennonites to emigrate—though the decree has been recently modified—that is better than the Turkish treatment of the Bulgarians. Besides, if Russia’s plan is not the right one, surely, the rest of Christian Europe might find another. There is no fear of making matters worse.”
