Priests Sell Masses and Prayers for Money

The city priests in Roman Catholic countries have such a torrent of requests for masses that they cannot execute the orders; so they send most of them to the country priests, retaining as commission part of the sums paid for them. That prayers should be stipulated for as a saleable commodity by the Catholics shows what perverted ideas of religion it is possible for priest-blinded people to cherish. Peter, the apostle, would have said, “Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.”—Religious Intelligencer.
