Signs of the Times across the Ocean.
A MR. FORD, of Bangor, Me., recently from England, at a meeting in Boston, lately, said:— “There is vastly more of what some people call ‘enthusiasm’ in Europe on the subject of the second coming of Christ, than there is in America. The potentates of Europe are seemingly strongly impressed with the belief that some extraordinary event is about to take place relative to our world and some power separate and distinct from this earth. Pope Pius IX. says, ‘There is a conflict impending between the ‘archangel Michael and the devil.’ Disraeli affirms that ‘there is to be an overturning’ of the nations and a great change in the governmental systems of the world.’ And other eminent European statesmen and religious as well as political philosophers, are anticipating some great demonstration hitherto not experienced by the inhabitants of earth. In London, of an evening, you will see men bearing large banners through the streets, on which are painted in prominent letters, the words:— All this is fraught with significance, and reminds us of the declaration of Holy Writ, that “men’s hearts [shall be] failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.”
