THE LOVED CITY.

Far, far beyond the blue dome o'er us bending, Cradled in Eden's calm, Lies that fair city to which our steps are tending, For every ill a balm.
Our hearts are in that home of love and beauty Through all earth's dreary night; But soon our lives of toil, and care, and duty, Shall end in morning light.
We sink o'erwearied in life's stormy throbbings, But rise to toil again; We hear the autumn winds wail out their sobbings O'er mountain, vale, and plain.
Sweet flowers blossom on the grave's dark portal, Watered by mourners' tears; But a crown of life shall deck the brows immortal Through God's eternal years.
Oh, that loved city! how my soul is yearning For a mansion over there! How 'mid the ills of earth my heart is turning To that home so bright and fair!
Oh that my weary sight had prophet's vision Within that jasper wall, Where white-robed angels, in those fields elysian, Before Immanuel fall!
We wait the city of unshaded splendor And pray, “Lord, Jesus, come;” Soon with a love most infinite and tender He'll take his children home.
How shall the glory of the King immortal Its radiance o'er us fling! How rest our feet within those pearly portals In tender shadowing!
High above minaret, and dome, and column, Will rise redemption's psalm; While hymns of glory, catholic and solemn, Give praises to the Lamb.
Up, up through feathery palms the song is sounding, High in the dome of Heaven, While from unnumbered harps the praise is sounding, Man saved and sin forgiven!
