Norway: Meetings and Subscriptions in Haugesund and Stavanger

Norway.

Stavanger.—From Bergen I went to Haugesund. Here I found one Sabbath-keeping family. I held one meeting, which was attended by about thirty, and about as many more listened in the street. The windows were open. Obtained two subscribers for the TIDENDE. A good impression was made, and prejudice was removed.
In Stavanger the Methodists kindly offered me their chapel. I preached twice. About three hundred attended each meeting. First-day evening I preached in the temperance hall to several hundred. In this place there are many people who seem to be candid, and who are willing to hear.
I attended a number of meetings on first-day. At 8 A. M. more than one thousand people were assembled in a tabernacle to listen to a priest who preaches repentance, and makes a great stir in the community. At 9 A. M. I attended a Methodist prayer-meeting; I preached at 10, and attended the Friends’ meeting at 3 P. M. I attended the Lutheran meeting in the cathedral of St. Peter at 4, the Methodist meeting at 5, P. M., and preached in the evening. Obtained three subscribers for our paper.
I have to remain here till Tuesday evening to make connection with the steamer from Denmark. I am invited to lecture on temperance in the temperance hall Tuesday evening, and shall do so, the Lord willing.
John G. Matteson.
