An Old-Fashioned Revival.

THERE are some good people on this coast who sympathize with Judge Drake and Dr. Cuyler. They long and pray for an “old-fashioned revival.” They are weary of spasmodic excitements that flash up and go out like fire in dry stubble. They have lost faith in periodical efforts to get up a special religious interest. They believe that a true work of grace must begin with godly sorrow—that first of all, professing Christians must repent of their backslidings, and return unto the Lord. When a church humbles itself before God, confesses its sins and consecrates itself anew to Christ, there is a revival. This is what the word means. It is the waking up of those who are asleep. It is the rekindling of the fire that was smouldering. It is the coming back of the wandering. It is strengthening the things that remain. It is returning to our first love. It is remembering from whence we are fallen, and doing the first works.—The Occident.
