Liquor and Devilution

COLONEL BAIN in a recent temperance address said: "I believe there is a process of evolution where man by the use of liquor descends below the level of the brute. Sixteen months ago, in Louisville, Ky., at midnight, a grandson of Henry Clay, the image of his illustrious ancestor, was shot in a bar room; at the same hour, in the same city, a grandson of John J. Crittenden was in jail. A block further away at the same time a great-grandson of Patrick Henry was in the station-house for drunkenness. I have my doubts as to evolution, but am convinced that the use of liquor is productive of what may be called devilution."—Sel.
